October 2017 update:

I apologize for such a delayed update. I am currently 24 years old and earning my masters in Global Merchandising and Product Development at Florida State University. I graduate December 16th, 2017.  To backtrack, junior year of college at the University of Florida, I got married.  After I graduated in May 2015, I moved to Tallahassee, FL because my husband was accepted into Florida State University’s College of Medicine. I took a year off, where I had a part-time job at a local clothing and monogramming boutique. During this time, around October 16, 2015, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Fast forward to March 2016, my husband and I became the youth leaders at our church here in Tallahassee where we continue to volunteer until this day.

I know this is much information, but I wanted to give you a most recent update!

Have a blessed day,
Jessica Lopez (Ramirez)

Jessica – what a blessing to hear from you after all these years!  Thank you so much for the update.  We are so sorry to hear of your diagnosis but from the sounds of it, it’s not stopping you from living life to the fullest.  Good for you!  We could tell even from nine years ago when we first got to know you that you were the type of person who could get knocked down but get right back up.  Congratulations on getting married, and volunteering together with your husband as youth leaders.  Our youth need great role models and you are certainly one.  It’s ironic about the timing of your note – Faith Carman and her daughter Trisha are driving up from Florida for a visit with Wendi and I as I type this.  I will be sure and say hello from you.  All the best

Eric and Wendi

July 2011 update:
From a nice phone conversation with Jessica:

Jessica is getting ready for her start at the University of Florida.  Has it really been three years since she received Eric’s scholarship?  She didn’t think she would get in as her performance on SAT’s was not reflective of her true abilities – but get in she did!  Jessisa also sent some recent photos which I will post here.  She is going to be majoring in international marketing although her secret desire is to become a pediatrician.  No doubt she can do anything she sets her mind to.  She is one of the most positive and optimistic people Wendi and I have run across in a long time.  Thats going to carry you far Jessica.  Best wishes,

Eric and Wendi

March 2011 update:
Hello Mr . Herzberg !

I have many things to tell you and I hope you can forgive me for not keeping in contact with you as often as I should . I wanted to tell you that I have been accepted into the University of Florida and I will be attending in the hopes of majoring in International Marketing and International Business. I was also awarded Homecoming Queen of 2011 as well as Senior Class President. All my hard work and effort paid off in the end for out of 381 students in my class , I have been ranked # 21. There is so much more to tell you so I cannot wait to speak with you.
Jessica Ramirez (:

Jessica – what fantastic news!  It is clear that you have really applied yourself and your hard work is paying off.  We are really proud of you.  I know Eric is too!

October 2009 update:
Jessica is doing really well.  She is taking two advanced placement (AP) classes (trigonometry and calculus) as well as physics and American history.  She is president of her junior class and also in the chorus. Jessica loves to sing and has designs on being a Christian music recording artist.  Her fallback position is in the field of international markerting.  She is planning on taking four AP classes next year.

Wow – Jessica you are really excelling and have some incredible goals.  We can’t wait to see what happens next!

October 2008 update:
Jessica is currently attending school at Sickles High School. Her goal is to attend college at NYU so she is taking several AP courses currently and working on improving her SAT scores. Her passion is to become a singer of contemporary Christian music but she also has a backup plan to major in business and international marketing.

Jessica – those are some great goals. You are wise beyond your years to have both a passion to pursue and a backup plan in case things don’t work out. We will be rooting for you and excited to see where this journey takes you.

Jessica

This is Justin’s mom, Faith. Of all the recipients so far, yours has stuck in my mind the most…When your dad shed tears when he realized what Kind of scholarship this was really moved Justin and I. When you realized too that it was a memorial scholarship, you also shed tears. I was moved beyond words, and all your accomplishments show me that the committee made a wonderful choice for you to have this scholarship
